I speak as to sensible people; judge for yourselves what I say. The cup of blessing that we bless, is it not a participation in the blood of Christ? The bread that we break, is it not a participation in the body of Christ? Because there is one bread, we who are many are one body, for we all partake of the one bread. (1 Cor 10:15-17)
As the Good Shepherd families grow and begin planning for worship, progressing towards becoming a local church of the Orthodox Presbyterian Church (OPC) denomination, we begin looking at the various aspects of worship. This week we will begin a study of the second of the two sacraments, the Lord's Supper (the first being Baptism). This will be an introduction to the Lord's supper inserted as a brief interruption to our Sermon on the Mount series. Using the Bible and the Westminster Confession of Faith, we will explore these questions:
- What is the purpose of the Lord's supper?
- How and when was it instituted?
- How is it effective to the Christian?
- Who is it for?
- How frequently is it observed?
