We have started looking at the eight Beatitudes of the Sermon on the Mount. We noted last week how these are not in haphazard order but one naturally leads to the next. The one who is poor in spirit will mourn his sins and from that mourning follows meekness. This week we will see that from meekness comes a hunger and thirsting after righteousness. The Christian will spend his lifetime longing for more and more righteousness until he is finally satisfied when Christ returns and takes him home to the new heavens and the new earth. From this fourth beatitude our attention then turns to the fifth, which is dealing with mercy. Just how merciful do we find ourselves? Often we long for the happiness of an easy life, but the one who shows mercy is concerned with the pitiable and the unjustly oppressed in our world.
